Ensure Tamil or English-speaking staff at railway stations: DMK MP to Centre

In a letter to the union minister, the Tamil Nadu MP said that people were facing difficulties at railway stations as the staff do not understand Tamil.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP Kanimozhi on Saturday urged Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to take urgent measures to appoint railway employees with a working knowledge of Tamil or English in railway stations across Tamil Nadu.

In a letter to the union minister, the Tamil Nadu MP said that people were facing difficulties at railway stations as the staff do not understand Tamil.

"I have written to the Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw about the issue at Kovilpatti railway station, people were not being provided proper service for not knowing Hindi and requested to appoint the employees who are proficient in either Tamil or English at railway stations across Tamil Nadu," the MP tweeted.

“The booking/reservation clerk in the Kovilpatti railway station neither knows Tamil nor English. This has resulted in passengers not able to book their reservations in Tatkal mode as the said booking/reservation clerk was not able to understand the reservation forms filled by the passengers in Tamil or English,” the letter mentioned.

She also alleged that “no action was taken and no solution was provided for the helpless passengers”, despite complaining to the station master.

“It is pertinent to employ booking/reservation clerks who has working knowledge of Tamil or English to effectively discharge their duties in Tamil Nadu. Therefore, I request you to take immediate measures to appoint people with knowledge of either Tamil or English in the Railway Stations across Tamil Nadu,” the DMK MP stated in her letter.
