The Supreme Court stayed defamation proceedings before a Gujarat trial court against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP MP Sanjay Singh for their alleged comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's academic degree.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta also directed the Gujarat High Court to decide within four weeks the petition filed by the AAP leaders to quash the summons related to the defamation case.

The Supreme Court said the proceedings in the trial court would be stayed till the Gujarat HC decision.

The court was hearing a plea moved by Singh seeking transfer of the case to a court outside Gujarat. The Supreme Court rejected the plea.
