Man linked to Naam Tamilar Katchi arrested for hurling abuses, shoe at Periyar statue in Chennai

A CCTV visual has surfaced from Jafferkhanpet, Chennai in Tamil Nadu, showing a man allegedly standing near the Periyar statue and hurling abuses at the revered Dravidian ideologue.
According to local eyewitnesses, the man went a step further, throwing his shoe at the statue. This act has sparked widespread outrage among Periyar’s followers, leading to protests and calls for immediate action against the accused.
The man, who is reportedly associated with the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) party, was seen engaging in the act in front of the Periyar statue in Kumaran Nagar on Monday. Eyewitnesses confirmed that the man climbed onto a pedestal before raising slogans against Periyar and throwing the shoe.
His actions have been widely condemned by various political and social groups, with demonstrators demanding accountability from NTK Chief Seeman. Periyar followers are accusing Seeman of inciting anti-Periyar sentiments, referencing his repeated critical statements against the Dravidian leader.
In the wake of the incident, the accused was swiftly apprehended and taken into custody, with authorities confirming that he is now remanded to judicial custody.
