Justin Trudeau's ex-wife says life post-separation gets messy

Sophie Trudeau says she never defined herself in her life as "someone’s partner".

Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, the former wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has opened up about her life after their separation. Sophie and Justin Trudeau split in August 2023 after 18 years of being married.

Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, whose book -- Closer Together: Knowing Ourselves, Loving Each Other -- is going to hit the stands, spoke to Canadian media outlets about her post-split life.

"We are still bound by respect and love, and we have each other's backs and minds and hearts," Sophie Trudeau told CBC Radio's The Current.

"Sometimes it gets messy, like, you know, in all family life. And it should be, because it kind of makes us appreciate the better times," she said, explaining the post-split problems.

"People were asking me, 'How is it to be the wife of a prime minister?' And I was like, 'What are you talking about?' Like, I'm just Sophie G. in the house. I'm staying the same person," she said.

Sophie Trudeau says she never defined herself in her life as "someone’s partner".

"I am reticent to see people through their titles and roles. I think when we go down that path we create bigger spaces between human beings. That is unnecessary," she told The Star.
