The construction of the Stephenson Road bridge in Chennai is nearing completion and is expected to be opened in June end. The bridge, which is being constructed at a cost of Rs 43.46 crore, will connect Ambedkar Salai and Cooks Road.
The bridge is being constructed by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and is expected to ease traffic congestion in the area. Currently, vehicles coming from Perambur have to take a six-kilometre detour to reach Pulianthope. With the opening of the bridge, vehicles will be able to directly reach Pulianthope, reducing the travel time by at least 30 minutes.
The bridge is a four-lane structure with a width of 20 metres. It has two carriageways, each of which has a width of 10 metres. The bridge also has a footpath and a cycle track.
The construction of the bridge began in January 2022 and was scheduled to be completed in December 2022. However, the work was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The bridge is now expected to be completed in June end.
